The plumbing was expanded, and the secret place remained. The Chamber of Secrets was then saved by Voldemort's ancestor, Corvinus Gaunt. Of historical interest: The Chamber of Secrets was at one point threatened with destruction - this happened when plumbing was to be expanded at Hogwarts (until then, wizards took care of their needs on the spot, and then took care of disposing of the waste themselves).

In the second of his adventures, Harry Potter had to face the Basilisk, which was controlled by Tom Riddle, or Voldemort.

It is the habitat of a dangerous creature called the Basilisk, meant to rid the walls of the castle of those who, in Salazar's opinion, are unworthy of learning magic - such as those who are not of pure blood (so-called "mudbloods"). The Chamber of Secrets is a secret place created by one of the founders of Hogwarts School of Magic and Wizardry, Salazar Slytherin.
